Overview

The report presents the results from a qualitative research into household food waste in Hungary, Germany, Spain  and The Netherlands. In each of the individual countries, six focus groups are conducted. This report presents the most striking similarities and differences between the countries and the analysis per country. It shows that awareness and motivation regarding food waste are present and on the rise in all countries but to different degrees and with different contingencies, depending on socio-cultural and socio-economic factors.

This report showcases insights into consumer food waste in four countries across Europe. The research was designed around two main research questions, each with a number of topics addressed. These research questions and topics were:

  1. How do people think about food waste? In terms of:
    1. Awareness of the issue
    2. Their sentiments on food waste generation and prevention
    3. Their thought of and beliefs about the issue
    4. Their perceptions of what they believe are stereotypical food-wasters as compared to those who do not waste food.
  2. What are the important issues related to food waste in a day-to-day context? In terms of:
    1. Motivations behind food waste generation and prevention
    2. Abilities and opportunities that co-determine levels of food waste
    3. Differential acceptability of wasting different food product categories and/or in different situations
