Registering as a feed supplier, manufacturer, marketer, distributor or user
Under the EU Feed Hygiene Regulation (183/2005), there is a system for the approval and registration of feed business establishments (premises) that manufacture, market, supply, distribute or use farm animal feeds, including feed additives, and placing former food products for human consumption in the farm animal feed chain, as well as livestock farmers and farmers growing arable crops for feed use:
The approval and registration of feed premises is mainly carried out by local authorities in Great Britain and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) in Northern Ireland. Step by step:
-
-
1
If you are unsure who your authority is, enter your Town/City and/or Postcode here.
-
2
On your local authority website, search for “register a feed business”.
-
3
You will then find out whether this is dealt with by your council’s Trading Standards department, Food and Safety or Food and Feed hygiene Department.
-
4
Contact the officer to find out who is responsible for feed law enforcement in your area. Feed business operators in a County Council area should send their completed form to the Council’s Trading Standards Department and not to Environmental Health officers based in a Borough or District Council.
-
5
Your council officer will organise by an inspection visit to your establishment before it is allowed to operate.
-
6
The establishment will be placed on a list to enable authorities to carry out follow-up checks and take enforcement action as appropriate. More information on the feed premises register.
You can find more information (including the list of feed activities and their respective codes which you will need to state on the form) and a model registration form on the Food Standard Agency’s Feed Hygiene Regulation site
In our experience registration and follow-up are fairly easy and straightforward. There are no fees for the registration of establishments.
