Overview

The Ambassador of the Netherlands to Denmark Mr. Henk Swarttouw and Founder of the Stop Wasting Food movement Ms. Selina Juul recently hosted a dinner with focus on the ‘fight against food waste’. Among the guests were H.E. Minister for Environment and Food of Denmark Mr. Jakob Ellemann-Jensen, several Ambassadors and high level leaders from organisations and businesses.

This year, Her Royal Highness Princess Marie participated as a guest of honour. In 2019, H.E. Ambassador of Sweden to Denmark and Stop Wasting Food will host a similar dinner, which from now on will become an annual tradition in Denmark. The Annual International Stop Wasting Food Dinner will from now on become a new annual tradition in Denmark, where a different embassy will host the Annual International Stop Wasting Food Dinner.

In 2019, Annual International Stop Wasting Food Dinner will be hosted by H.E. Ambassador of Sweden to Denmark Mr. Fredrik Jörgensen and Founder of Stop Wasting Food movement Ms. Selina Juul. Members of The Royal Danish House, members of Danish and international governments, Ambassadors, and key stakeholders will be invited to these dinners. The purpose of the dinner is to inspire the fight against food waste and to focus on UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 – to reduce the global food waste by 50% before 2030.

This year, the Annual International Stop Wasting Food Dinner was hosted by H.E. Ambassador of the Netherlands to Denmark Mr. Henk Swarttouw and Founder of Stop Wasting Food movement Ms. Selina Juul, with H.R.H. Princess Marie as guest of honour. The menu served was made from surplus food prepared by top chef Mr. Lucas Jeffries of the world famous Dutch restaurant against food waste InStock, in collaboration with Danish top chef Mr. Martin Jacobsen from restaurant Kadeau and Kadeau at Home. “Ugly” and imperfect fruits and vegetables and other good surplus food, which otherwise would have been wasted, were prepared – and the guests had the opportunity to take the leftovers home in biodegradable boxes, so no food was wasted.

During the dinner, inspirational speeches about food waste were held, with purpose to inspire Denmark’s leading key stakeholders, to anchor the agenda in their respective organisations and projects. H.E. Ambassador of the Netherlands to Denmark Mr. Henk Swarttouw is very satisfied with the dinner: “The fight against food waste is one of the Netherlands’ top priorities. As the world’s second largest food exporting nation, we are assuming our responsibility to lead this fight and to work towards SDG 12.3. For me it was an honour and a pleasure to work with Selina Juul and to host the first Annual International Stop Wasting Food Dinner last week. I have strong personal relations with the Kingdom of Sweden, therefor I am extremely happy that the Swedish Ambassador, Fredrik Jörgensen, has offered to host next year’s Stop Wasting Food Dinner, which I am sure will be another wonderful occasion.”

H.E. Ambassador of Sweden to Denmark Mr. Fredrik Jörgensen is looking forward to co-host the Annual International Stop Wasting Food Dinner with Founder of Stop Wasting Food movement Ms. Selina Juul in 2019: ”Stop Wasting Food is doing important work and, under Selina Juul’s inspiring leadership, it has got a lot of acknowledgement and appreciation, in Denmark as well as internationally. The ambition to stop food waste is completely in line with the goals set in 2030 Agenda and UN’s sustainable development goals. For the Swedish government, climate matters have high priority. The Embassy of Sweden in Copenhagen focuses on green conversion and sustainable use of natural resources. I am proud and pleased to pick up the baton from Ambassador of the Netherlands Henk Swarttouw, and host the dinner next year. I am very much looking forward to it.”

Ms. Selina Juul, Founder and Chairman of the Board of the Stop Wasting Food movement is also very excited: “We are very honoured and thankful that H.R.H. Princess Marie participated in our dinner against food waste – and I would also like to thank all of the guests. I also want to express my gratitude to everyone who was involved in this fantastic project. I am very much looking forward to co-hosting the Annual International Stop Wasting Food Dinner with H.E. Ambassador of Sweden to Denmark Mr. Fredrik Jörgensen and the Embassy of Sweden in Denmark. I am delighted to see that this important agenda has got such a strong anchoring.”
