Overview

The ForMat-project was a five-year collaborative project (2010-2015) between the food industry, organisations and the government.  The main objectives were to assess the extent of food waste and the reasons why it occurs in the value chain (including the consumer) and to initiate preventative measures. ForMat has included food producers, wholesalers, retailers and consumers, but not primary industry or the hospitality sector. The food industry and the government have funded the project with funds from The Ministry of Climate and Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the Ministry of Children, Equality and social inclusion, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries and the Ministry Health and Care service.

To provide the project with more long term financing, a voluntary funding model was created (2012), where food producers were invited to pay 3 % extra on top of their annual packaging fee.
