Overview

The research project “Ways to reduce food waste” (REFOWAS) aims to identify sustainable approaches with measures, evaluation frameworks and analysis tools for a sustainable handling of food under integration of socio-ecological innovations.

It deals with avoidable food waste in Germany. In order to better understand the causes of waste generation and its effects, practice partners will be involved in case studies (fruit and vegetables, bread and bakery products, school catering). These actors help to develop appropriate measures to avoid food waste. The aim of the project is to analyse the agricultural and food sectors along their value chains with regard to the generation of food waste and in particular the proportion of avoidable waste, and to identify and test strategies and starting points for measures to reduce waste.
