The appetite for meat is growing worldwide. Since the early 1960s, worldwide meat consumption has more than quadrupled. But the production of meat has an enormous impact on climate, land use, biodiversity, soil and water. And also with a view to future world food supply, the question arises as to how much meat we can afford in the future. It is not the animals themselves that need the largest proportion of land, but their feed.

In intensive livestock farming, the protein supply is secured with high-quality imported feed – especially soy from South America. In recent years, the demand for soy as animal feed has risen sharply and soy cultivation areas have expanded enormously. Millions of hectars of unique habitats have been destroyed by soybean cultivation in recent years, leading to a drastic decline in biodiversity in the respective regions. As if that weren’t enough, soy, which is usually grown in monocultures, also requires huge amounts of pesticides.
