Overview

“The renunciation of ham rolls or hamburgers is active climate protection”. Tanja Dräger de Teran, WWF Climate Protection and Nutrition Officer, sums up the results of the study “Klimawandel auf dem Teller” (climate change on the plate).

After “Tonnen für die Tonne” (tons for tons) and “Fleisch frisst Land” (meat eats land), it is the third part of a large-scale WWF study on consumption and environmental protection.  Our meat consumption and the use of soy in animal feeds are crucial for the size of our footprints in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and global land use. Every German could avoid greenhouse gas emissions of about 800 kilograms of CO2 equivalents – or about seven percent of the annual greenhouse gas emissions caused by him or her – by consuming less meat. The climate footprint of an average German is currently around eleven tons of CO2 per year.
