Overview

The research project “Verringerung von Lebensmittelabfällen – Identifikation von Ursachen und Handlungsoptionen in Nordrhein-Westfalen” (Reduction of food waste – Identification of causes and options for action in North Rhine-Westphalia) on behalf of the Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Agriculture, Nature and Consumer Protection in North Rhine-Westphalia (MKULNV) is part of the discussion about a new appreciation for food and a sustainable lifestyle. The Institute for Sustainable Nutrition and Food Economics (iSuN) of the Münster University of Applied Sciences was commissioned together with the Verbraucherzentrale NRW to carry out the study focusing on the identification of cause and action options for the reduction of food waste in North Rhine-Westphalia. The study derives proposals for action to reduce and avoid food waste in North Rhine-Westphalia in four basic categories “Process optimization – interface management”, “Structures and rules”, “Utilisation instead of devaluation” and “Appreciation and upgrading”. On the basis of these fields of action, concrete approaches can be derived for the participants of the Round Table “Neue Wertschätzung für Lebensmittel” (New Appreciation for Food) but also for politics in North Rhine-Westphalia in order to avoid food waste and to identify “new markets” for the reduction of loss of goods or further use of food waste.
